'Aalimah Umm Safwaan
Umm Safwaan is a well-respected senior instructor at Darul Rasheed Academy in Buffalo, NY. Being the daughter of a family of converts to Islam she has the honor of being the first African American woman to graduate from this illustrious institution. Upon her completion of the 'Aalimiyah course, she immediately began to devote her time to the teaching the deen of Islam in local masajid where she continues to hold classes. Knowledge of The Six Books of Hadith, and proficiency in the Hanafi school of law are only a few of the milestones she has reached through her studies. Certified in Nuraniyyah, she has a unique style of teaching, which is engaging and practical for students of all ages.
Umm Safwaan’s approach and devotion to the deen is shown through her balance of family service and community service. She's the heart and leading scholar of the Pray N Play family, which is a family of students of knowledge. She continues to strive to preserve the deen by constantly establishing new learning opportunities for seekers of knowledge in her household, community and beyond.
Ustaadh Jaabir
Jaabir Harris began his studies of Islam in the science of Tazkiyah under the guidance of Shaykh Ibrahim Memon Madani, after accepting Islam at the age of fifteen. After attaining certification to teach Nuraniyyah from Shaykh Muhammad Al-Raa'ee, he went on to receive ijaazah in classical texts of Arabic grammar from Shaykh Muhammad Faruq Al-Hanbali; 'Aqeedah from Shaykh Abu Mahmoud Khidr Amin, and Islamic Studies from Mufti Azeemuddin Ahmed. He has a Liberal Arts Degree from Medaille College and has also completed courses in adolecent psychology and education philosophy. He has twelve combined years of experience as a Qur'aan instructor and sub-administrator, primarily at the Universal School of Buffalo, and is also known locally for his efforts in da'wah and youth service.
Currently Ustaadh Jaabir serves as Khateeb (for Friday sermons) at Masjid Khadijah in Amherst NY, and is committed to tutoring both groups and individuals in Arabic and Quran. Various venues such as UB, Buffalo State, Northwestern University and D’youville have invite him to speak about African Islamic History and other topics. As the Director and CEO of Pray N Play, he aspires to further his ability to serve the ummah by devoting his life to learning and teaching the Islamic sciences from a balanced perspective.
